Our Story

Chocolate city literature festival is a one-of-a-kind romance reader convention created to celebrate everything we love about romance literature and the vibrant community behind it.

The Story Behind the Chocolate City Literature Festival

The Chocolate City Lit Festival (CCLF) is a vibrant celebration of Black stories, creativity, and community. Taking place in Washington, D.C., CCLF brings together award-winning and emerging Black authors, book lovers, and literary influencers for a weekend of conversation, connection, and culture.

We are deeply passionate about amplifying Black authors especially independent authors-by providing a platform where their stories can be seen, heard, and celebrated. From thought-provoking panel discussions and intimate author signings to a buzzing exhibitor marketplace and family-friendly programming, CCLF is where literature and community meet.

Our mission is to uplift Black voices in publishing and create space for readers to discover, connect, and be inspired.

The Village Behind CCLF

Nia Evans

Founder, Queens of the Pages Book Club

Festival Director & Strategic Partnerships Lead

Nia Evans has been a lifelong reader, starting with childhood favorites like The Baby-Sitters Club before discovering urban fiction through authors like Shannon Holmes. Blending her love for books and her expertise in curating experiences, Nia created Queens of the Pages Book Club. Through QOTP, she has built a thriving community of readers and launched dynamic book-centered events that celebrate literature and connection.

As the Festival Director and Strategic Partnerships Lead for the Chocolate City Lit Festival, Nia is dedicated to amplifying Black authors, creating intentional spaces for readers to connect, and building lasting partnerships that elevate the festival’s mission.

April Minor

Social Media & Digital Content Manager

April is an avid and diverse reader that absolutely loves supporting indie authors and attending book events. Although she reads countless authors and genres, she is definitely a thriller/horror and urban fiction lover. When she is not making magic behind the scenes of Chocolate City Literature Festival, she is creating bookish content, writing book reviews and interacting with some of her favorite authors via social media. Her nonreading activities consist of TRAVELING #1. Next up is give her a good scary movie, some good food and you’ll have a friend for life.

As the Social Media & Digital Content Manager, April is committed to ensuring all pertinent information is announced through our social media platforms and answering any relevant questions from attendees. She is dedicated to the festival’s mission and determined to help shine light on Black authors.

Shirelle Mcswain

Panel Programming Director

Shirelle fell in love with books at 14 when her best friend handed her Flyy Girl by Omar Tyree—a moment that unlocked a lifelong love for reading. A proud D.C. native, she’s a true champion of the DMV and a fierce advocate for Black stories and culture

As Panel Programming Director for the Chocolate City Lit Festival, Shirelle is the mastermind behind our dynamic author panels. She curates engaging, thought-provoking conversations that highlight the richness of Black literature across genres. Whether it’s urban fiction, romance, thrillers, or literary fiction—if it’s Black and brilliant, she’s on it.

When she’s not mapping out panel lineups or connecting with authors, you’ll find her at book events, chopping it up with fellow readers, or enjoying quality time with her son and daughter. Give her a good book and a room full of book lovers—she’s in her happy place.

Daja Arrington

Exhibitor Coordinator

Daja Arington is an avid reader and lover of all things fiction. She especially loves romance, thrillers, and pretty much any story that pulls her in and keeps her turning pages. Outside of reading, she enjoys bingeing a good reality TV show, playing The Sims when she wants to escape into a world of her own making, and baking. She LOVES picking up new hobbies.

At Chocolate City Lit Fest, Daja serves as the Exhibitor Coordinator. She handles vendor communication and logistics, making sure everything in the marketplace runs smoothly and that the amazing vendors feel supported from start to finish. She’s passionate about creating a welcoming, well-organized space where everyone can show up, shine, and celebrate creativity and culture.
